Eleven years earlier, the world had awakened to the struggle of Timorese people against Indonesian occupation and repression after images of Santa Cruz cemetery massacre were released.
Following a protest during the funeral ceremonies of a young pro-independence man, the Indonesian military didn't hesitate to fire, even inside the cemetery, where hundreds of people, mostly young people, were trying to protect themselves from bullets. The moment was captured on camera by British journalist Max Stahl, who managed to get the images out and the world had no doubt about what was happening.
